School Travel Plan for Townhill Schools

The school travel plan
Today a school travel plan has been published by Townhill Infants and Junior Schools. The aim of the travel plan is to improve the travel routes to school so as to encourage the pupils and parents to walk to the Townhill Schools. The plans have been very successful in encouraging funding from other sources, like Hampshire County Council, to improve the main paths on routes to schools.
The main targets of the Townhill School plan are:
- Reducing the speed limit outside of school to 20 mph.
- Repairing and improving maintenance of footpaths, hedges, drainage etc. (especially Cutbush Lane).
- Addressing the dog mess issue by regular cleaning of paths and provision of waste bins.
- Putting a new footpath between the infant and junior schools and widen the existing one.
- Installing high visibility bollards by the school entrances.
- Enforcing the zigzag lines law.
The plan was developed with the help of a survey of the pupils and parents at both schools asking:
- How they got to school each day ?
- Which routes did they take ?
- How would they prefer to travel to school ?
- Were there any particular problems on the route to school ?
The aim of any travel plan is to increase the numbers of children walking to school. So a number of measures can be taken to improve road crossing points, widen paths and slow down traffic to make the experience of walking to school both a safer and more enjoyable one.
The whole process of preparing and generating the report was co-ordinated by a small sub-committee made up of governors, staff and council officers from both schools and both local authorities. Commenting on the report at the launch sub-committee member and school governor Cllr David Goodall said:
"This is a good plan and great deal of hard work has gone into it from the staff, pupils and parents, and I believe this will improve the routes to school, as such plans have already done so elsewhere."
He added:
"This is a good example of the community working together to help improve the environment in which they live"
The launch this morning at Townhill Junior school was attending by pupils, parents and staff from both schools as well as local councillors and officers from both Southampton and Eastleigh local authorities.
