Freedom, Fairness and Trust on May 5th

April 19, 2005 1:00 PM
By David Goodall in Local Radio - Saints FM

Hello I am David Goodall the Liberal Democrat candidate for Southampton Itchen. I am 42, married and we have children at and currently I am working as a senior manager for Siemens at Roke Manor Research, developing the next generation of communication systems.

I was born in Southampton my first school was Glenfield infants I am now a governor at Townhill Infants and a councillor in West End.

The main issues nationally are all based around the three areas of freedom, fairness and trust.

I believe is it important that the people can trust the government of day, whether it is over student top-up fees, taxation or even going to war.

It is important that the government actually trusts local people with local decisions.

It is equally important that a government

  • is fair open and honest about taxation,
  • that it is fair about trade with the third world
  • and that really can be trusted to take effective action on the environment

It is really important too that pensioners and students get a fair deal from the government. Pensioners have generated the wealth that we now enjoy and students are the future that as a country we must invest it.

These are just a few of the reasons I support the Liberal Democrats

I believe that on heath are policy of putting the patient first before targets is the right, let's stop the Whitehall meddling and let the doctors and nurses make more decisions

Scrapping students fees and not given the young a heavy burden of debt at the start of adult life is the right thing to do.

Having more 10,000 more police and not more plastic in the form of I.D. is the right thing to do.

It is wrong too that elderly people are forced to sell their homes to pay for personal care, Liberal Democrats would make this free on the NHS.

It is wrong to ignore climate change real action must be taken now to boost renewable energy and public transport systems.

It is wrong too that pensioners basic pension is below the minimum income level. Liberal Democrats would scrap mean testing for pensioners and give them an £100 extra per month stating with the over 75s.

We are honest about taxation and propose only one tax raising measure 50% tax band for the 1% of the population earning over £100,000 per year.

We are the only main party promising to scrap the unfair council tax, under local income tax half of the people will be better off, a quarter will be largely unaffected and a quarter will pay more. The key thing is it is linked to your ability to pay it.

We are also the only party saying the quality of the education system would be improved if classes sizes were smaller, 20 for infant schools and 25 for junior school. The present government does not believe this so class size have to the kept at around 30 per class.

Final my message to all people listening today is on the 5th of May be positive vote for a real alternative vote Liberal Democrat and together we can build a better future for all.
