Southampton Itchen PPC David Goodall shows how better recycling is possible in neighbouring Eastleigh

Southampton's Liberal Democrats pledge to offer every household in the city a new glass and food waste collection service, and to keep council tax raises below inflation. Each home would receive this new service as part of a Liberal Democrat programme of change for the city.

Southampton Lib Dem group leader Jill Baston said:-

"The people of Southampton deserve the high standard of recycling service other areas get and a firm pledge on Council Tax"

The Lib Dems have published their manifesto for the city and country ahead of the local and general elections on May 6. It offers commitments on a range of issues including the environment, tax and education.

The Lib Dems will also make significant investment to increase spending on roads and pavements. And aim to keep class sizes and schools smaller to help improve the education of the city's children at a time when the performance of some schools needs to be raised. They also proposed more community police officers on the streets, and Community Justice Panels to give victims as say in setting reparations for offenders. And they propose more support for local businesses to help ensure economic recovery.

Commenting on the proposals Southampton Itchen PPC David Goodall said:-

"We need to get the whole council working for the people and our proposal for local area committees, with real power and budgets will achieve that."

And Southampton Test PPC David Callaghan added:-

"We will also draw up real plans to tackle the appalling state of the roads and pavements in the city."

Nationally the Lib Dems would re-establish the link between pensions and average earnings, as well as scrap council tax and replace it with a much fairer income tax linked to people's ability to pay.
