All candidates should publish past salary, tax and expense information received from elected public office and, if elected, they should promise to continue to publish this information.
Prior to the last general election, the MPs’ expenses scandal shocked many and made many people, including myself, feel extremely angry. I was very annoyed that people we should all trust beyond reproach with their financial dealings had been found wanting.
In some cases, they broke the law with their dealings, in a similar manner to, tax evasion that Silvio Berlusconi has been found guilty of.
In very many more cases MPs pushed the system to the limit, to get as much money as they could out of it, in a similar manner to, the extreme legal tax avoidance schemes, that people with money use to avoid paying through the state to those people without money.
In elected public office, this highlights the need to be open, transparent and honest about all monies that people receive for that office and about the taxes they pay on that money.
This is why when the MPs’ expenses scandal broke, I decided to publish all salary, tax and expense information related to my council work. This is also why, as Police and Crime Commissioner, I will publish all salary, tax and expense information related to the Commissioner’s job.
The job of Police and Crime Commissioner is a responsible position, both for the obvious reason that it concerns public safety, and for the financial control of a large £300 million public budget. Therefore, it is vital that the person responsible for this budget is open, transparent and honest about all monies they receive from being in elected public office.
Therefore, I call on all candidates in the Police & Crime Commissioner election for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight to publish on their websites salary, tax and expense information plus any other monies received, related to their various elected public positions in the last 10 years.

I am convinced the scandal of MPs’ expenses would not have happened if the salary, tax and expense information had been openly reported. In the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, it’s vital that this type of scandal doesn’t occur because of the knock on affect this would cause to the effective working of the Police force.
