The environment has always been a major concern for Liberal Democrats. We believe that there should be a green thread that goes through every area of Government policy starting with faster action on climate change, cutting traffic congestion and giving proper support to alternative fuels.

Yet none of Labours six pledges for this election announced in Tony Blair's whistle stop tour of the country in February even mentioned the environment and Michael Howard's I believe advert also did not mention the environment.

Our policies are focused on three main areas:

Tackle climate change

  • Climate change is a major threat to our planet and urgent action is needed.
  • Lead by example - Blair's fine words are no substitute for action - we must aim to meet our commitments on reducing greenhouse gas emissions well before the deadline and, together with the EU, make the US follow our lead.

Cleaner transport and environment

  • Reduce transport pollution and congestion by promoting public transport, especially the railways.
  • Reduce domestic pollution by cutting down on domestic waste and promoting recycling .
  • Sustainable development means tackling all forms of pollution.

Cleaner Power

  • Reduce demand, for example, through better home insulation and more effective boilers.
  • Increase renewable energy use - 20% use by 2020, 50% by 2050 and don't replace existing nuclear power stations at the end of their operating lives.

David Goodall, Southampton Itchen's parliamentary candidate says "It is essential for the future that this country has a government that is really prepared to take environmental action, like the Liberal Democrats are."
