Good Morning Conference, when considering this election people often say that political parties should not be involved. In fact our own English regional party said exactly that. Yet to get elected any person standing needed a group of like minded friends to help deliver leaflets on a cold day or knock on doors, and as a member of this party for over 25 years my obvious group of friends to help are you.
However in some senses our own English regional party are right, to run a council or even parliament you need like minded friends to vote through policies that you all believe in, which is why political parties were formed in the first place.
Yet this election is different, it is for a single person to a single position and in that position they could do just as they wish once elected.
This why it is important to know both the person standing and the political philosophy they believe in. Now, as the preamble to the party consultation states, I believe in.
" a flourishing system of democratic local government in which decisions are taken and services delivered at the most local level which is viable"
This is why as commissioner I will ensure that each district, borough and unitary authority has its own section in the police and crime plan and its own representation on one of the advisory panels a plan to set up, which is more then currently happens!!
I also believe in upholding our...
"values of individual and social justice", where "we reject all prejudice and discrimination based upon race, colour, religion, age, disability, sex or sexual orientation and oppose all forms of entrenched privilege and inequality"
This is why as commissioner I will ensure that all five of my proposed advisory panels and the four Police scrutiny panels are balanced both in terms of their equality and their political nature.
And as Liberals we will
"... work for a sense of partnership and community in all areas of life... We seek to make public services responsive to the people they serve, to encourage variety and innovation within them and to make them available on equal terms to all.
This is why as commissioner I will ensure partnership working is one of my top priorities. The police tackle law enforcement however it's teamwork with the community that will prevent crime, ensure justice for victims and rehabilitate offenders to stop further crime.
As Liberal Democrats we...
"…believe that the role of the state is to enable all citizens…, to contribute fully to their communities and to take part in the decisions which affect their lives"
"we will protect the right of citizens to enjoy privacy in their own lives and homes"
This is why I am standing in this election.
In the other candidates, a former Tory minister, a former conservative leader of New Forest District Council standing an independent, a former conservative councillor from Basingstoke standing for UKIP, Labour councillor from Southampton and Don from Liphook, I could not see anyone who represented my values and political outlook.
Conference it is our common beliefs that are best suited to this new role and it's together we can do what works to make our community a safer and better place to live in.
