Tidal Lagoons

A great idea clean safe energy generation aiming to get a zero carbon Britain by 2050.
This week Lib Dem Energy Secretary Ed Davey said he wanted to back the great idea of tidal lagoons. The scheme is for six lagoons, four in Wales and one each in Somerset and Cumbria, which will capture incoming and outgoing tides behind giant sea walls, then let the water either in or out of the Lagoons via power turbines to generate electricity. This plan will generate 8% of the UK electricity requirement in a clean and safe manner, without the need to depend on the vagaries of the international oil market.
I believe this scheme, along with other schemes like the ones around the Island, are just the sort of electricity generation systems the country needs. The development of all these schemes must of course be sensitive to their surrounding environment. However, they are essential if we are to have a secure and green electricity generation system.
To ensure the electricity generation sector continues to develop these types of schemes it is vital to strengthen the current Climate Change Act targets. This is why in the next parliament Lib Dems plan to have a Zero Carbon Britain Act that will do just that. It will introduce a decarbonisation target for the sector and end the use of dirty coal power stations. The overall aim is to have a Zero Carbon Britain by 2050.
We need to leave our children a secure and green electricity generation system.
